List of people, some with house or farm names, attending a Meeting of the Vale of Clettwr Hunt on 3 January 1948 â€" Master of Foxhounds , A. S. Lewis .

Copy of a letter dated 4 March 1948to Mr H.J.Davies Esq. of Pengraigwen, Llandyssul, from the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company, 2 Blue Street, Camarthen, confirming a policy has been prepared and asking for a remittance of £1.13s.4d.

Letter, unsigned and undated to Mr Isaac of the Stag and Pheasant, Pont-ar-sais, Camarthen, saying that owing to the death of Mr H. J. Davies, Secretary to the Vale of Clettwr Hunt, the writer is helping the Master to straighten things out.

Letter dated 7 July 1948 from Arwyn (the Master of Foxhounds) of Neuadd-Deg, Carmarthen, to J. Amphlett Lewis, Solicitor, 4 Bridge Street, Llandyssul saying he has enclosed papers relating to the Hunt for Amphlett Lewis’s attention.

Copy of a letter dated 9 July 1948, replying to VC/4 to Arwyn S. Lewis Esq. thanking him for the papers. Amphlett Lewis has made enquiries at the National Provincial Bank, where there was a balance of £600 5s.6d. in the Hunt Account, and £301.11s.8d. in the Steeplechase Account. Cheques drawn on the Hunt Account were signed by the Treasurer, Mr Evan Evans, and the Secretary Mr H.J.Davies, and on the Steeplechase Account by Arwyn S. Lewis, as Chairman, and Mr H. J .Davies as Secretary. Some specimen letters to the various people concerned were sent for Arwyn’s approval.

Letter dated 12 July 1948 from Arwyn S. Lewis to Ampnlett Lewis in reply to the above letter with corrections to the specimens sent, leaving the word ‘Master’ out. A meeting had been arranged for ‘Monday next’.

Copy of a letter dated 12 July 1948 to Arwyn S. Lewis from Ampnlett Lewis, who has not been able to find the names of the members of the Committee. ‘The Minute Book was not with the papers’.

Letter dated 13 July 1948 from Arwyn S. Lewis of to Amphlett Lewis saying there was no list of Hunt Members in the Minute Book. He is asking the late Harry Davies’s Office to look there for one. Failing that he suggests trying Ivor Davies of Penlan, Llandyssul.

Copy of a letter dated 13 July 1948 from Amphlett Lewis to Arwyn S. Lewis. Amphlett Lewis has sent out notices for the Meeting the next Monday to 14 people whom he lists. He asks if any are left out. There are five names added in pencil.

Copy of a letter dated 2 July 1948 from the Vale of Clettwr Hunt to Mr Jones, the Manager of the National Provincial Bank, Llandyssul. At the Meeting held at the Cilgwyn Hotel, Llandyssul, on the 19 July 1948, Mr E.H.Jones of Barclays Bank, Llandyssul was appointed Treasurer, and a proposal was passed to transfer the accounts to Barclay’s Bank, the new Treasurer and the Master would sign the cheques. He pointed out there were no complaints about the handling of the old account. The old Treasurer, Mr Evan Evans had resigned.

Copy of a letter dated 3 August 1948 from the Vale of Clettwr Hunt, to the Manager of the National Provincial Bank Ltd. Llandyssul, telling him that the last Secretary of the Vale of Clettwr Hunt, Mr Harry J. Davies was deceased, and that the committee instructed him to say he was now appointed temporary Secretary.

Copy of a letter dated 25 August 1948 from the Vale of Clettwr Hunt to the Resident Inspector at the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company, Ltd., Blue Street, Carmarthen asking if the amount of £1.13s.4d of Public Liability Insurance for the Vale of Clettwr Hunt in the letter dated 4 March 1948 (see VC1/2) had been paid, and asking what the policy covers.

Letter from the above Insurance Company dated 26 August 1948 to J.Amphlett Lewis saying that the amount was still owing and it related to Third Party Public Liability for the Point to Point Races held at Dolwen Farm Pencader on 22 April 1948. He regretted learning of the death of Mr H. J. Davies.

Letter dated 6 September 1948 to Amphlett Lewis from Aelwyn T. Morgan, Veterinary Surgeon, Bronhaul, Penlan Road, Carmarthen. He says he did not have the collection book, but lists money he has received enclosing cheques. His wife had sold 35 dance tickets, a cheque for these was enclosed, as was also the remaining 15 tickets.

Letter dated 6 September 1948 to Amphlett Lewis from J. Davies of Gwascoed, Llanwenog. He wished to know who had accused him of not handing in his collecting book and the money at the last Meeting of the Clettwr Hunt. He had handed them in to the late Mr H. Davies the Secretary, with witnesses.

Letter dated 6 September 1948 to Amphlett Lewis from W. P. Davies of Ysguborstone, College Road, Carmarthen, enclosing a cheque for three dance tickets, and two he obtained from Miss Jane Davies of Green Grove, Felinfach which were returned to him. He was sorry not to have sent it sooner, but Mr Lewis told him to hang on to it after Harry’s (Mr H. J. Davies) death.

Copy of a letter dated 3 September 1948 from the Vale of Clettwr Hunt to the Resident Inspector at the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company, Ltd., Blue Street, Carmarthen, enclosing a cheque for £1 13s. 4d., for the Hunt’s Public Liability Insurance. He wanted a receipt, and a document mentioned by them to the late Mr H. J. Davies. See VC1/2 and VC1/14.

43. For Arwyn s. Lewis, £15 first prize in the 5.10 Race. Also £4.17s 2d. refunding the amount Arwyn had paid out for the services of four constables at the Point to Point.
44. For Mr ~A. R. P. Board of Mill Farm, Ewenny, Bridgend, two cheques for £10, being second prizes for the 2.30 and 4.40 Races.
45. For Mr G.T. Williams of Sandy Haven, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, £3 for the 3rd Prize in the 5.10 Race.

Sec. of the Vale of Clettwr Hunt to y Insurance Policy for the Vale of Clettwr Hunt, and was a receipt for the money paid.

A letter to Arwyn Lewis of Neuadd-deg, Carmarthen, dated 16 October 1948, from Roy Allen and his Band, of Gorseinon, Swansea, in reply to Arwyn’s phone call dated 18 October, 1948 saying that the band was now free on the Hunt Ball’s date of December 3 1948.

A letter dated 18 October 1948 to Arwyn Lewis from Roy Allen and his Band, saying his Band had been engaged for the Hunt ball at the Drill Hall Carmarthen for Friday 3 December 1948 at a fee of 27 guineas, and asking for details of the hours of dancing etc.

Lewis returning some cheques signed by the Treasurer, and saying that for the Hunt Draw, Ivi at the Alltrodyn Arms had promised a bottle of port, and Lewis Daniel Evans, Capel Dewi something to the value of £1. Also that a cheque of £20 10s for him, from Mr Gwenda Lewis, and given to Arwyn at the Meeting, had not been handed over.

A series of letters dated 21 October to the 1 November 1948 from the Vale of Clettwr Hunt concerning advertisements for the Hunt to be put in the ‘Hunting Appointments’ in the Western Mail, as follows; Vale of Clettwr Hounds, Monday 25 October at Henfaes Bridge at 9.30 am, 2 November at Capel Dewi at 10.30 am, 9 November 9 at Pen-top at 10.30 am, 13 November Kennels (Opening Meet).
68. Copy of a letter from Amphlett Lewis to the Editor saying that the advertisement for the 18th had not appeared.
69. Copy of a letter to the Editor dated 25 October 1948. Amphlett Lewis explains he is at present acting as Secretary, the advertisements had not appeared, that the Hunt is a recognised Hunt, ‘in fact it is one of the best packs in Wales and these appointments are considered to be of great importance in that area.’

Copy of a letter dated 4 November 1948 from the Vale of Clettwr Hunt to Major Francis, Myrtle Hill, Carmarthen, referring to his letter to him of 31 August (concerning returning collection books and any money) and asking for his remittance of £7 7s.0d.

Letter dated 4 November 1948 from John Francis (Land and Estate Agent), the Hon. Secretary of the Camarthen Hunt Club, The Mount, Carmarthen, saying his Committee could not agree to the Vale of Clettwr Hunt holding a Hunt Ball ‘in the centre of Carmarthen Country’. The M.F.H. Association ruled that permission should be asked to carry out a function or activity in a neighbouring Hunt’s area â€" and his Hunt had already refused the Llandilo Farmers’ Hunt permission to hold functions in Carmarthen because it would result in loss of revenue to themselves. He said his Hunt would not hesitate to bring this matter before the M.F.H. Association.

Williams telling him that his name was on the list for an invitation to the Hunt Ball, but Amphlett had not completed all the invitation cards, and was now enclosing some. He had noted the request for 8 tickets and had reserved the table.

An undated letter to ‘Rory’ from Sebbold(?) at Lampeter, saying that Llandilo had gained preference over Carmarthen, Pixie being anxious to attend it. A note says that Dr Bowen and his wife are coming.

Letter dated 21 November 1948 to Mr Lewis from Phyllis Hughes of Green Gables, St.Cclears, saying they are sorry they cannot come to the Clettwr Hunt Ball, there was a B.M.A. Dance in Swansea that night. ‘You must be Roy. Hope Valmi and family keep well.’

Letter dated 1 November 1949 copied to the Western Mail, from Lieut-Commander D. le Gronier Chapman, R.N.V.R.of Alltrodyn, Llandyssul, about the Western Mail advertising a Meet of the Vale of Clettwr Hounds at Alltrodyn in the absence of any invitation from him. Alltrodyn and its 800 acres had been designated by a Public Notice in the Press as a Nature Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, and the County Planning Officer had been told of this. He asks the Hunt to cancel the notice and hold the Meet elsewhere.

Lewis to all the Hunt Members reminding them that their subscriptions were due, and thanking them for their support in past seasons. The Committee were making every effort to keep the hounds going.

A sequence of letters and copies of letters dated between 28 January 1950 and 24 February 1950 in which Arwyn Lewis the Master of Foxhounds put forward his resignation, and the tenancy for the hounds to be kept at the Kennels at Talardd ended. Miss Lloyd Price of Talardd, Maescrugiau made new terms on which the hounds could remain until 29 September 1950, reduced to 15 couples at the end of the season. A small management committee was appointed.

This was sent to Bryn Thomas Esq. Builder, of Water Street, Carmarthen, who was to produce a balance sheet for the Point to Point. Also included is a letter concerning a collection made at the Boxing Day Meet.

A letter dated 10 March 1950 from Commander Chapman of Alltyrodyn, Llandyssul to Amphlett Lewis, the Acting Secretary of the Vale of Clettwr Hunt. Chapman wanted an assurance from the Committee (concerning not stopping up earths to dig out foxes, and not to dig out foxes after they had gone to earth) that he had asked for in his letter of 11 November 1949.

With this 1950 Correspondence was a collection of documents dated between 18 February 1944 and the 24 May 1944, concerning the appointment of a new Master of Foxhounds and drawing up an agreement between the Clettwr Hunt and the new Master. There is a copy of the draft of an Agreement to remain valid until 30 April 1945 between Griffith Davies of Rhydfene, Llandyssul, Evan Evans of Pontwelly, Llandussul and Ivor Davies, Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary acting for the Vale of Clettwr Hunt Committee, and Captain George Meredith Esq. of The Flat, Dennis, Towcester, Northamptonshire, the proposed Master. There is a letter from George Meredith to J. Amphlett Lewis, who had sent a copy of the Agreement to him. There is also a printed account of the Rules and Regulations of the Carmarthenshire Hunt Club dated 1918.
