The Invoice Ledger and the Ledger form the central spine

of the collection, all debits were recorded in the former

and all credits in the latter and the two Ledgers taken

together reflect the financial and commercial viability of

the Company. The day books were used to record all

expenditures and incomes on a daily basis, the statements

of expenditure were then written into the Invoice Ledger

and those of income into the Ledger.

The cash books provided a simple method for the dissection

of payments and receipts and reference to the relevant

entries in the Invoice Ledger and Ledger was made by the use

of page numbers.

Cash flow on a weekly basis was recorded in the weekly cash

account books, but these books contain no cross references

and simply record the cash totals carried forward and

debited. All purchases were recorded in the Monthly Purchase

Book with cross-references to the Invoice Ledger.
