Similar to previous, but only the photographs on the first page, of Church Stretton, Llanymynech and the Long Mynd, have been labelled. The following pages have images of a voyage around Cardigan Bay, views of Aberystwyth and its hinterland, a variety of castles, including Clun, Conwy and Dolwyddelan, and other places, some exotic, notably Stonehenge.

NATURE AND CONTENT: plain black-bound album, similar photographs to previous, without labels or inscription. Subjects again include Yorkshire sites, Brimham Rocks and Fountains Abbey, as well as places in Wales, Harlech Castle, St Davids, Peterwell ruins (Lampeter). Also snapshots of a battlecruiser, the Renown or the Repulse. There are, however, more photographs of people and more people included in photographs, than in the preceding albums. There are several views of Goitre Isaf farm, similar to those found elsewhere in the W.J. Lewis collection (WJL/2/6/2/10).

NATURE AND CONTENT: red/black bound album, ‘Photographs’, again without labels or inscription. Although some subjects are probably outside Wales (particularly those on the opening pages which, as with the other albums, probably depict a summer holiday) the majority appear to have been taken within the principality, many in and around Aberystwyth. There are fewer family snaps and notable monuments, as compared with the previous album, and more of interesting characters and ‘artistic’ views.

NATURE AND CONTENT: Re-used Cae-Cynon Mine Stem Book for the 1850s. Inclusions = WJL/6/4/6-7.
The Caegynon Mine was working from 1850 (source: Bick The Old Metal Mines of Mid-Wales, Part II, 33). Stem was the term used for miners’ underground shifts, generally 6-8 hours in this period (source: Lewis’ Lead Mining in Wales (1967), 268-9).
The book does not appear to have been used for its original purpose. The first 20 pages have been cut down to act as an alphabetical register of accounts, apparently by Philip Nichols, listed as innkeeper of the Druid Inn, Goginan, in the 1861 census. The register was little used, only a few names are entered, notably that of the Welsh Potosi Mines, the company operating the Esgairhir mine between 1853-4 & 1857 (Lead Mining in Wales, 195). Transactions are recorded only for William Mason, who consumed quantities of brandy, ale & whiskey, between March 21st & April 15th 1856. A spider resides under K.
The book was subsequently used as a ratepayers’ vestry book for the township or parish of Melindwr in the County of Cardiganshire, from 1858 to 1893. It records notices of forthcoming public vestries, mostly held in schoolrooms. The business of these meetings generally concerned lists of paupers, accounts of rates & elections of overseers (for an example see WJL/6/4/7, below), however, there are also entries concerning the construction of the Factory Bridge.
